Tuesday Art ATTACK- Frederick Judd Waugh “Southwesterly Gale, St. Ives”

Frederick Judd Waugh an American artist is best known for his marine paintings. Waugh was born in New Jersey, in 1861. He created picturesque almost photo like paintings of the sea. He was acclaimed for the use of light in his work. He studied to become a painter at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Academie Julian in Paris. After his father a noted portrait artist, Samuel Waugh, died in 1885 he moved back to Pennsylvania from school and became a commercial artist. He later moved to England in 1892 and began to paint the ocean. His works were very well received by the American public. He moved back to the states in 1907 and would stay there for the rest of his life. Waugh died in 1940.
