Carson's Bi-Monthley Crunch! Wanna Chill? – Redondo Beach, CA

Restaurant Reviews by Carson Hart
Wanna Chill? – Redondo Beach, CA
Rating- 9/10

Hello and welcome back to the Bi-Monthly Crunch! Like the last restaurant, this one is inspired by the tropical islands of Hawaii! However, unlike the barbeque, this little shop specializes in ice cream and smoothies, but are more commonly known for their shave ice! They are located in the King Harbor Plaza, just off PCH in Redondo Beach.

Lots of colors! Here I am ordering my shave ice, with vanilla ice cream on the bottom of course. Here’s a good tip: go to Wanna Chill on a Wednesday and get ANY SIZE shave ice for only $2! And added ice cream is only $.075 more! The prices are fair already, but this deal is hard to pass up.

My friend Ben Manclark checking out their list of flavors… it can be quite intimidating!!

Crunch time! I wore this shirt because it reminded me of shave ice! I chose banana and watermelon for my flavors, Ben chose the sour patch combo!

Every time you go, they’ll stamp your card for a free shave ice. As you can see I have been there quite a few times (On Wednesday of course)! Although I may be redundant, these tasty treats are perfect for a hot summer day! The prices are fair, and the service is great. They don’t mind at all if you go back to ask for extra syrup. The location isn’t the most aesthetic, however it is convenient for anyone who likes to take a cruise down PCH. Overall, I give the place a 9/10. Thanks for checking up on this weeks Bi-Monthly CRUNCH! See ya next week!

Tuesday Art ATTACK- Emil Nolde "Maisons Frisonnes"

By Christian Franzen

Emil Nolde was born August 7th, 1867 in Southern Jutland, Denmark. He was raised on a small farm but at a young age realized he was not the farming type and decided to apprentice woodcarving and engraving from the areas masters. In 1889 he was accepted to the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany. Upon graduating from school he went directly into teaching in Switzerland from 1892-1898.

Nolde left teaching in 1898 to pursue the life of a full time artist but upon being rejected to the Munich Academy of Fine Art that same year he decided to move to Paris, France. During his time in Paris he became familiar with the rising style of impressionism and honed his skills as a painter. In 1902 he moved to Berlin, Germany and became close to famous art collector Gustav Schiefler who introduced him to many other German artists of the time. Between 1906 and 1910 he was apart of the expressionist group Die Brüke in addition to being a member of the Berlin Secession. He shortly left both groups due to him not being able to work well with others.

In 1921 Nolde became a member of the National Socialist Party and promoted expressionism as the major artistic style of Gemany. However, when the Party announced that they viewed all forms of modernism as a disgrace Nolde was dismissed from the Party. Up until this point Nolde had held a level of prestige in the German art world but after the National Socialist Party took full control of Germany nearly all of his works were seized by the government and was forbidden to paint.
After World War II ended Nolde was awarded the German Order of Merit which is Germany's highest civilian decoration. He continued paint and make prints into his old age and died at the age of 88 on April 13th, 1956 in his home in Seebüll, Germany.

Tuesday Art ATTACK- William Wendt "Nature Smiles"

By Christian Franzen

William Wendt was born on February 20th, 1865 in Bentzen Germany. When Wendt's family moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1880 he began to take an interest in painting. At the age of fifteen Wendt spent much of his time painting outdoors developing his unique landscape approach. During his youth in Chicago he also worked in a factory painting formula pictures; which hated. This lead him to pursue more spontaneity within his own works.

Between 1894 and 1896 Wendt took time to travel the United States as well as internationally with his friend George Symons to find scenes for their paintings. After returning he married the sculptress Julia Bracken in 1906. The two of them decided to settle in California that same year. The California landscape proved a perfect environment for Wendt's paintings. He would often hike into remote areas of the California coastal region looking for inspiration.

Wendt's unique take on landscape painting paired beautifully with the rich colors and diverse landscape of California. Being well respected both in California as well as nationally Wendt earned the title "the dean of Southern California artists". In 1911, Wendt was elected the first President of the California Art Club where he oversaw many state wide exhibitions and contests. He showed in major California galleries as well as galleries in Chicago, Boston, and New York until his death in December of 1946.

Summer Songs- Dog Days by O

Another great new find by find by Hit City USA San Francisco band O is a blast of rock power! O creates a compelling blend of 1970s high rolling rock n' roll with modern alternative sounds. With the striking and versatile voice of front-man Gregory Di'Martino  they make mature and powerful tunes that stick with you! It is no wonder this band is taking the Bay Area by storm!

Dog Days by O-
These here are some tunes for summer cruising hard with shades and fruit drink in the car just barreling down the highway thinking about being all wet with salt hair and maybe attractive and the possessor of The Perfect Line and cool sex. And some are for the other end of a summer afternoon lying on your back on the floor thinking deeply and warm of her or him or it and how time can be so slow and everything is beautiful and if only you could see always it always is good.

Carson's Bi-Monthley Crunch! L & L Hawaiian Barbecue – Redondo Beach, CA

Restaurant Reviews by Carson Hart
L & L Hawaiian Barbecue – Redondo Beach, CA
Rating- 8/10

Aloha! This weeks Bi-Monthly Crunch takes place at the L & L Hawaiian Barbecue restaurant, located in the midst of Redondo Beach’s one and only Riviera Village! The location is really charming, sporting many smaller local businesses. One of my favorite details of this area include the string lights that light up the streets at nighttime. Regardless of the many shops and restaurants, I didn’t find much trouble for parking, which was pleasant surprise.

Here I am placing my order at the front. Simple ordering, nothing fancy.

My good friend Ben Manclark about to chow down on his Katsu Chicken Bowl!

I ordered a Barbeque chicken plate, which also includes rice and macaroni salad. I was never given any sauce, so I had to go back to the front to grab some. The actual taste of the food was alright. And that response was coming from someone who hadn’t eaten all day. The rice and chicken seemed a little dry, but the salad was pretty good. I was, however, stoked on their selection of nectar drinks! They had everything, ranging from strawberry to peach, but I decided to go with my classic fave; guava!

Selfie break!

For some reason I liked this trash can. It was cool to see it say “Mahalo” instead of “Thank You”. I really liked the overall look of the interior of the restaurant. It was very true to it’s theme, but wasn’t overwhelming. The location was very relaxing, and the prices were fair, however the food was just decent. I give it an overall 8/10. Mahalo for stopping by this weeks Bi-Monthly Crunch!! See you in two weeks!

Wednesday Art ATTACK- Thomas Moran "The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone"

By Christian Franzen

Thomas Moran was born in Bolton England on February 12, 1837 to an American family. His family moved back to the United States in the early 1840's and settled in Philadelphia. When he was only a teenager he began an apprenticeship making wood-engravings. During his apprenticeship he grew tired of engraving so he spent more of his time dabbling in watercolor painting . In the mid 1850's he began illustrating for Scattergood and Telfer which just so happened to be one of the companies which he was previously engraving for.

At this point Moran became a full time painter and began to study with local American painter James Hamilton. While in the tutelage of Hamilton, Moran was exposed to the British painter J. M. W. Turner and in 1862 he traveled to England to see Turner's work. Moran acknowledges that seeing Turner's work had an immense impact on his paintings in regards to composition and color.

In 1871 Moran was asked to accompany the United States Geological Survey Team into the relatively unknown Yellowstone region. During there 40 day expedition visually documented more than 30 areas and kept a sketch book detailing the expeditions progress. Moran's paintings and sketches along with photographs from the expedition helped convince the United States Congress to establish the Yellowstone territory as the nations first National Park in 1872.

The time he spent in Yellowstone had a tremendous impact on Moran as an artist and he returned to the area shortly after to paint the landscapes of the area. This resulted in his first large financial success when the United States Government The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone in 1872 for $10,000. Moran remained a devoted landscape painter and traveled around the United States painting for the majority of his life, but always revisited Yellowstone for several months out of each year. He died in August of 1926 in Santa Barbara, California.
