Awesome 70s Surf Poster: Sea of Joy

 

This is the poster for "Sea of Joy" from 1972. This film was directed Paul Witzig and was the last of his triology of Surfing films. His first two films were "The Hot Generation" 1967 and "Evolution" 1969. All three of these films featured Nat Young.

Tuesday Art ATTACK- 2600 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica


These are pictures of the incredible 2600 Wilshire Blvd Home Savings that was built in 1970. This Santa Monica Landmark features beautiful artwork created by some wonderful Los Angeles artists. The front mosaic was designed by Millard Sheets and executed by Denis O'Connor and Nancy Colbath. The fantastic sculptures are by artist Richard Ellis. The Home Savings Bank chain was purchased by the late Washington Mutual in 1998 for 6.4 billion dollars. Many of the Home Savings branches were either shuttered or converted. The 2600 Wilshire is now a New Balance store. Photos by Peter Leonard.

Tuesday Art ATTACK- Ray Crooke “Three Figures”

Ray Crooke is a famous Australian artist known for his warm paintings of the island people around Australia. He won one of Australia’s most prestigious art awards, the Archibald Prize, in 1969 for his portrait of George Johnston. The Archibald Prize is awarded for the best portrait of the year by an Australian; normally Ray Crooke is not a portrait artist. This is my favorite piece of his and you can buy it. It was painted in 1956. It is now on the auction block at Bonham’s Sydney August 22nd for the very small price of $30,000.

N.C. Wyeth is one the most prominent and well known illustration artists in American History. This painting is a illustration from the book Treasure Island. His 1911 version of Treasure Island is one of his most well known illustrated works. Father of legendary American artist Andrew Wyeth.

Tuesday Art ATTACK- Winslow Homer “Undertow”

Wait . . . where's the red swim trunks. Early lifeguards in action. 

Winslow Homer is one of America's preeminent artists from the 1800s. He was a Realist, mainly focused on painting scenes of ordinary life and landscapes. "Undertow" is based on a real life rescue that Homer witnessed on a visit to Atlantic City in 1883. He choose to do a freizelike formation to create a more dramatic effect. The painting was first shown at the National Academy in 1887.
