Puppy's Planet!!! Mazzy Star

By Puppy Stopnik

Mazzy Star is a psychedelic rock band formed in Santa Monica, California, in 1989. Mazzy Star had shown their fans the dark side of psychedelia.

Hope Sandoval with her killer vocals and David Roback as guitarist, together they slayed. They got picked up by Capital Records and released their album "She Hangs Brightly". The album wasn't an immediate success. A couple years passed and they released a follow-up album "So Tonight That I Might See". Unexpectedly they got a hit "Fade Into You". After they received so much attention, the album was certified platinum!

Hope had such a unique way with words along with a beautiful voice. Hope sings like someone is about to fall asleep for a very long time and David follows along.

In 1996 they released their third album, "Among My Swan". This album presented a far more acoustic approach. They continued writing and recording music but waited a whole 17 years to release their 4th album publicly... Wow!!

They said "We weren't really in the mood to release music". The two haven't changed a bit since the 90s. They only operate on Mazzy Star time. Slow, mellow and smooth.

Tuesday ART ATTACK- Kazimir Malevich "The Knifegrinder"

By Christian Franzen

Kazimir Malevich was a very influential Russian Painter who's artistic contributions helped usher the art world into the period of full abstraction. Born in Kiev, Russia in 1878; he later left Kiev to study painting at the Moscow School of Paining in 1904. While in school he became friends with a bunch of other young avant-garde artists that banded together to form Russia's second big artistic movement, Suprematism.

This new movement of Suprematism was a tremendous breakthrough not only for the young Russian painters but for the global artistic community. These young painter were the first to break into pure abstraction. Yes, previous to their first exhibit in 1915 there where others who dipped into abstraction by altering visible subject matter. However, the Suprematists ventured into the unknown by creating paintings totally void of any subject matter. The though process behind this ideal was that the recreation of already existing beautiful objects in representational art will there by make that art beautiful, and in doing so it lacks originality as well as forethought.

Malevich was one of the biggest figures of this young group of artists. He published the Suprematist Manifesto in 1915 accompanied by the groups first big exhibition. The young Malevich looked at the past avant-garde breakthrough of Russian art and used them as a stepping stool for his own expression. His paintings began to break down and become more simple yet considered through out Malevich's life resulting in his perhaps most famous work , Black Square. The more simple and pure Malevich's work became the more it became to be filled with a deep mystic atmosphere.

The Supremacist movement came to an end in 1919 with the end of the WWI. Following the end of the Supremacism Malevich became a prominent teacher throughout Russia. He had a prosperous teaching career spanning from 1920 up until 1929.
Tragically in 1930 when the Stalinist regime turned against abstraction Malevich was ostracized from the Art world, stripped of his teaching titles, and forbidden to create art. Many of his previously praised works began to be heavily negatively criticized from Stalin's Regime. His paintings where taken out of museums and many destroyed. Living out the remainder of his life in an exhaled existence Malevich died of cancer in May of 1935.

Puppy's Planet!!! David Bowie

By Puppy Stopnik

David Bowie is an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalists, record producer, artist and actor. Did you get all that? This is a man of many talents, but best known for his unique voice!

Bowie started playing music as a child. He played in many small bands but then moved on alone. Bowie first came to the attention of the public in July, 1969 when his song "Space Oddity" reached to the top 5 in the UK. David didn't just make music, he made art.

1972 was the year David began to get a glimpse of the power of pop. He released his album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars." The sound of the suburbs suddenly got a lot louder.
The summer of 1972 was busy for him in the studio. He produced an album for Lou Reed. Bowie didn't just make hits for himself, but for others too!

He started getting interested in the music he heard in America. Authentic soul with a unique UK perspective. He produced the amazing album "Young Americans." Not long after the album release he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career in acting.

To this day he hasn't stopped writing, producing, singing, painting and acting. 63 years young and still killing it.

Summer Songs- Summer Never Ends By Dog Party

Sacramento's punk rock sister act Dog Party is the utmost!! This dynamic duo crafts punk rock gems that pulse with 1980s spirit and attitude! Dog Party is perfect for rocking in your bedroom or blasting down the highway! Make sure to pick up their awesome fourth album, Vol. 4 out on Asian Man Records!

Summer Never Ends By Dog Party

These songs easily represent our favorite tunes from summer 2015. Because we both don't have school during the summer, we try to tour as much as possible in that period of time. We spend a lot of time playing shows, but we spend even more time driving place to place. When we get closer to the venue, listening to the bands selected is the perfect "get pumped for the show" sesh there is!

Listening back to these songs now, I can't help but get a nostalgic adrenaline rush reminding me of the exhilarating life on the road. They're all crazy catchy and mostly high-energy. We bring it down a notch with the La Luz track, but the slower tempo doesn't make it any lesser of a song. The back up vocals and groovin' solos get us dancing in our seats.

1. Good Advice - Growlers
2. Glazin' - Jacuzzi Boys
3. Poor Queen- Thee Oh Sees
4. Ozma - Shannon and the Clams
5. High Waisted Shorts - Swimmers (FKA Emily's Army)
6. I Can't Speak  - La Luz
7. Layback!!! - The Traditional Fools
8. Landslide - Scraper

Puppy's Planet!!! Laura Thornhill

"Puppy's Planet" is a new segment to the Mowgli blog! It is replacing "Thrifting with Puppy" and will focus on a larger spectrum/ Puppy will cover her interests, loves, and experiences! Learn here about one of Puppy's idols Laura Thornhill!

By Puppy Stopnik

Laura was a female skating legend. She started taking skating seriously when she moved to California and got a Black Knight Skateboard for her 13th birthday in 1974. She lived in what was known as Hollywood Rivera. It consists of nothing but hills, which was a skaters paradise. She skated every day for hours after school.

Laura won 1st place at her first contest, did I mention she was the only girl? People started taking notice after she got 1st at Steve's Bay Contest. That same day she became a member of Logan Earth Ski Skateboard team. This team was ideal for any young skater. Not long after, she scored the cover of Skateboard Magazine. Laura was known for her bold and exciting style.

Her career had slowed down when she dislocated her elbow in 1978. She continued to skate and be the top female skaters thru 1979, but the pain was starting to wear on her. She continued to have pain in her elbow for the next 15 years. She still skates to this day, more of a mellow longboard freestyle though.

Brothers Marshall + Mowgli= BROWGLI OUT NOW!!!!!

BROWGLI is the collaborative, dysfunctional brainchild of the Brothers Marshall and the broz of Mowgli Surf. Sometime in 2015, the BROZ got together over a kettle of Brothers Marshall patented psychedelic sun tea and drifted into 6 days of blissfully tie-dyeing everything in sight, pausing only to see who could bounce closest to the moon on their 45-foot wide fluorescent green trampoline. Returning to the terrestrial plane, the BROZ discovered the clothes on their backs had transformed into what could only be described as technicolor, inter-dimensional RADwear.

The 6 piece BROWGLI collection, consisting of 4 custom, hand-dyed tees, and 2 overshorts, widely believed to be the first earthly incarnation of BROveralls, will be sold exclusively through digital portals: www.brothersmarshall.com & mowglisurf.com.
