Ray Crooke is a famous Australian artist known for his warm paintings of the island people around Australia. He won one of Australia’s most prestigious art awards, the Archibald Prize, in 1969 for his portrait of George Johnston. The Archibald Prize is awarded for the best portrait of the year by an Australian; normally Ray Crooke is not a portrait artist. This is my favorite piece of his and you can buy it. It was painted in 1956. It is now on the auction block at Bonham’s Sydney August 22nd for the very small price of $30,000.
